Recently I've been working on some editions of functional common objects (like coasters!) and now it's pencils and pens.

The good folks at Cafe Volan in Asbury Park have given me a bit of a shelf, and I'm doing a project of arranging and re-arranging things throughout the summer. It changes frequently.

Right now on the shelf there are:
some Pencils For Your Thoughts and Seasonal Tease Pens
a tiny pirate sculpture
a pencil drawing
two ink drawings on napkins (one of the Gropius Dessau Bauhaus)
a cardboard sculpture
and a big rusty nail.
Oh, and really good coffee.

Is this some kind of deep questioning about the fragile, precious nature of work on paper?

My mother had a lot of great grammar books and dictionaries in our apartment when we were growing up. One of my favorite was a small book called Commonly Used American Idioms and lately I've been playing around with them in my studio.

My good friend Makale has a terrific eye for spotting beauty and has made a beautiful store called Wilderness of Wish. Very special Tools and Ornaments.
I was so happy when she asked if I would do an edition for her, and these screen-printed Conversation Coasters are now available. A little more about the project here.

A very favorite from the Art Fairs this weekend: Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian at The Third Line (Dubai) booth with intense and beautiful mirrored surfaces. I'm still thinking about them today.

She is 88 years old.

Shakerag Hollow (which I also hear has a beautiful wildflower trail) is named for an old Sewanee custom "whereby residents could procure moonshine before the advent of liquor stores. A customer wanting moonshine would come to the bluff at Beckweth Point, near what is now the fourth hole of the Sewanee golf course, shake a rag at the moonshiner who lived down in the hollow, and leave money for a purchase in a tree stump. Then, as the song about Uncle Bill puts it, 'you go 'round the bend, and when you come back, then, there's a jug full o' good ole mountain dew.' When he returned, the customer would find a jar of moonshine left in the stump, and the money removed."
I'm very excited to be teaching a workshop there this summer, June 17-23.

Playing around - I started making these in 2008 with the end scraps of paintings- the collection of odd shaped cut off parts, left-overs. Idioms, funny pairings, palate cleansers, (Alice Elliott Dark called them 50-cent words). I am interested in what’s happening when they are all together.
